We were delighted to welcome over 400 guests to Moulsford for an ‘Adventure into the Wild’ Open Event in May, including many current families. Despite a week of chilly and mixed weather, we were so grateful that the sun shone and our visitors were able to soak up all that the school has to offer.
Moulsford staff offered a huge number of activities for the visiting children to get involved with, with the climbing wall busy, kayaking in the pool, paddleboarding on the river, music, face painting, paddling pool fishing, bug hunting, forest school, bird feeders, soft play and many more. With Pure Boating on hand to offer boat rides and a delicious picnic lunch from our catering team, it was a magical morning.
The special guest was Old Mole Jack Randall who talked about his experience and love of travel and animals. Jack gave such a brilliant talk to the children and parents and his passion and knowledge came shining through. He brought various animals with him including a python, scorpion, bearded dragon, cane toad and a tarantula – the risk assessment for the latter meant that it stayed in its box!
Following Moulsford, Jack went to Stowe and then to Oxford University where he studied zoology. Jack’s passion for nature and wildlife started early and his first pet, aged about 11, was a snake! He followed his dream and was successful in an application to serve an apprenticeship in Australia with Steve Irwin aged 14. Steve was a mentor and friend to Jack until he was tragically killed by a stingray barb in 2006.
Jack now has a company offering privately guided learning-safaris for families in Namibia. Their bespoke adventures are designed for adventurous families, combining camp-style accommodation and a Land Rover touring experience to track down the region’s incredible wildlife - from elephants to lions. It’s a rare chance to turn classroom curiosity into a real wild adventure with Jack. Jack also operates trips in Costa Rica, Australia and Indonesia. It was also fantastic to reunite Jack with two other Old Moles who attended the event, all three now fathers themselves!
