The Moulsford Foundation will be a registered charity, which means that if you complete a Gift Aid declaration any gift is automatically increased by an extra 25% at no extra cost to you provided that you are a UK taxpayer.
In such cases, for individuals subject to higher rate tax of 20% or more, you are also able to claim further tax relief, enabling your support to be even more cost effective.
This information is provided for illustrative purposes only. Please seek financial advice from a qualified accountant when planning your philanthropic giving.
Example:
If you make a donation of £1,000 by Gift Aid, the charity will receive an extra £250 (the amount you have already paid in tax in respect of the gift). Your total gift will therefore be worth £1,250 but it costs you only £1,000.
Alternatively, you could choose to give £800 and your total donation, with the rebate, would be worth £1,000 to the charity.
If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you should enter the amount of your gift on your tax return. HMRC’s self-assessment process will then arrange to give you the benefit of the extra tax relief (the difference between the basic rate of 20% and your higher rate of 40% or 45%) through your assessment for the year
Example:
If you are a 40% taxpayer and you choose to give a total gift of £1,000 (worth £1,250 to the charity) your further tax relief would be £250 (i.e. 20% of £1,250). Thus, a gift of £1,250 would only cost you £750, including your tax relief.
Companies can make gross donations to charity and get relief at their corporate tax rate.
Example
If your company is taxed at 19% or 25%, and you make a £10,000 donation, you can claim a deduction for £10,000, and the company’s tax bill will be reduced by £1,900 or £2,500 respectively.
A legacy left to charity through your will is free of Inheritance Tax (IHT) that would otherwise be payable on all assets. Leaving a gift in this way allows you to benefit the charity and effectively reduce your IHT liability.
